4 of 5 Network setup required phone support to fix. Thursday, March 27, 2008 bogotaone from Denver, CO
I love the machine but the network setup was impossible until I talked with a support person. They walked me through it - not easy for someone that doesn't deal with network "stuff" everyday. I have it on a network using a router rather than connected directly to the PC. I was surprised to findout that I can not press the scan button but MUST use the software to scan a document when setup this way. It could use a single page feeder but in all very good for the price. Cudos to BUY.COM for fixing an issue with shipping. Was this review helpful?

No complaints. Cheap ink and multi-function. Quality and speed is OK. Not used it that much so far, but I have it set up on my home network (rather than via USB to PC) and that was simple enough - just followed the directions. Was this review helpful?

This is a solid inkjet all-in-one, and a good value as I paid $84 after rebate here at buy.com. It's hard to beat the value of having all these functions in one relatively compact package that includes a document feeder.
<p>
Printing and copying work well. The quality is very good for an inexpensive inkjet printer. I mean, let's be realistic. If you want commercial-quality printing you should budget for a laser printer. Inkjet is strictly for home and small business. And if you want really high-quality photo prints, use a commercial service like Shutterfly, ofoto, Kodak, or one of the other online services. Their prints are cheap enough that it's not worth bothering with all the special paper and excessive ink usage required to print photos at home.
<p>
The cartridges are not $4 as a previous reviewer said. The Brother-brand cartridges are about $20 each. But you can get cheaper off-brand versions much cheaper that probably work fine.
<p>
Scanning works well and I have no complaints about the quality.

The ethernet port on the printer makes it super convenient if you have a wired or wireless network. Plug one end of the ethernet cable into the printer and the other end into your wireless router and you can print from any computer on your network, wired or wireless. I can sit in my living room and print stuff from my laptop while the printer is in my home office upstairs. This isn't a "wireless printer" in the strict sense of having a wireless adapter installed in the printer. The only difference is this printer needs to be physically plugged into your router, while a true wireless printer doesn't. The difference isn't that important because the true advantage is being able to print without having to plug a cable into your computer, and this printer makes that possible.

For Mac OS 10.5 Leopard users, one caveat: the included CD doesn't include all the correct drivers for Leopard, so you have to get them from the Brother web site. See their Leopard support statement at http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate-us.htm. You can get the correct scanning driver there. You also have to search around for an updated version of the Control Center and the RemoteSetup utility. That's a little bit of a drag and kept me from giving a "5" rating. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Economical printer that networks easily Tuesday, March 04, 2008 Sam from NY, NY
This is a nice all-in-one that does its job(s) well. Networking couldn't have been easier. Just plug in the cables and the software will find the printer, and you're done. Print quality is decent but not as good as my HP. For example, copying in the faster Medium Quality mode on my HP G55 is equal to the much slower Best Mode on this. This copier's medium mode is somewhat fuzzy.
The review from Rick from Centereach is wrong. As the description clearly states, there is a 35 page autofeeder that works well for faxing.
Ink is incredibly cheap because each cartridge is just a container of ink. There is no printhead like other printers. That means that once this unit's built-in permanent printheads are worn out, the entire thing will have to be replaced. But you save so much money on cartridges that you can easily afford to buy a new printer. In fact, I buy generic ink refills at the 99 Cent store which gives me about 2-3 refills for a buck! Easy to use all in one. Receives fax well. Sending a one or two page fax isn't a problem but without an automatic paper feeder it gets a little old to scan each page manually. But since this is mostly a copier/scanner for me it is not a problem. The OCR program that comes with the scanner works well but not as well as most OCR programs.
For the basics and for the price this 3-1 product is recommended. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellence Wednesday, November 28, 2007 Derek from Gurnee, IL
So far no problems, but I've only been using the print function, not the copy nor fax nor the other one that it might have. Easy to set up as a network printer - did it in a matter of minutes. Was this review helpful?
